The great poet Grigore Vieru was commemorated today at his grave in the Central Cemetery in Chisinau and in the homes of all the people who loved his works. Hundreds of people, including persons of culture, officials, ordinary people and children, came to the poet's grave to lay flowers, recite a poem and make promises, Info-Prim Neo reports. The writers and actors came first to the grave. They laid flowers and shared their pain with the ordinary people, the admirers of Grigore Vieru. Actor Sandu Cupcea spun memories of the poet. “He was a kind man. His face expressed gratitude even if he discussed with an unknown person. He was indulgent with his interlocutors. I liked talking to him. I think Grigore Vieru was a tribune, as Eminescu. He struggled for our dignity and for the national conscience. The poem “I Am” is a relevant example of this.” Grigore Vieru's son Calin said he regrets that his father did not live to see the triumph of democracy in Moldova. “If he had been alive, he would have been near us on the barricades and in the actions that we planned,” he said, adding that the design of the monument that will be erected at the bard's grave is close to competition. The monument will cost about 60,000 euros. The funds will be collected from the sale of tickets at commemoration concerts that will take place on February 10 and 11 and from people that will want to make donations. Prime Minister Vlad Filat came alone to the poet's grave with a bouquet of roses. “Grigore Vieru showed us how we should live our lives. Everyone feels his absence,” he said, stressing that the Government will formulate a plan of commemorative actions dedicated to Grigore Vieru. The mayor of Chisinau said every child in the municipality of Chisinau and in the Transnistrian schools will receive by a book written by Grigore Vieru as a gift. “It would be great if all the children in Moldova had Grigore Vieru's books,” Dorin Chirtoaca said, adding that the project for Chisinau and the Transnistrian region will be financed by the Chisinau administration. Viorel Popescu, a representative of the Iasi-based Cultural Association “Pro Basarabia si Bucovina”, said he likes Grigore Vieru's works very much. “Vieru's book “Roots of Fire” that I bough after the revolution of 1989 impressed me a lot. In 1992, I had the luck of meeting the great Vieru. He was a special and very receptive man,” he said. “For me, Grigore Vieru was the poet of love, freedom and justice. We educated many generations by his poems,” said Iulia Gutulea, a teacher of the Chisinau High School “Mircea Eliade”. “He was a modest and decent man. He defended us, but could not defend himself. I cry every time I read his poem “Shirts”. I also grew up with my mother only as my father died during the war.” Grigore Vieru died on January 18, 2009 in a road accident.
