Green NGOs launch proposal for cleaner air in Chisinau

In the context of the 2010 European Mobility Week, the nongovernmental organization Salvaeco and the Moldovan Environmental Movement (MEM) are going to suggest to the Chisinau Municipality a cycling scheme for all the districts of the city, Info-Prim Neo reports. “We consider that civil society should be more insistent in what concerns the implementation of development activities for sustainable and environmentally- friendly modes of transport”, said Vladimir Garaba, the head of MEM's Chisinau branch, at a news conference on Thursday. “The activities carried out during the European Mobility Week confirmed to us that this year things have started to change”, the environmentalist added. Salvaeco and MEM will propose to the city authorities to build parking spaces in outlying areas so as to leave the central part of the city to people who prefer “green” modes of transport. The proposal includes installing of new bike lanes and launching of an air pollution map. Another proposal is addressed to the Government, asking it to initiate a junk vehicle removal program. Marked yearly during September 16-22, the European Mobility Week is an awareness raising campaign aiming at sensibilizing citizens to the use of public transport, cycling, walking and at encouraging European cities to promote these modes of transport and to invest in the new necessary infrastructures.
