The commission decided that Zinaida Greceanii will be under number one in the ballots for the May 20 elections, while Stanislav Groppa – under number two.
Zinaidei Greceanii’s documents were submitted by the first deputy speaker of Parliament, Communist MP Vladimir Turcan on May 14 at 14.10. The candidacy of Zinaida Greceanii was supported by 33 MPs of the parliamentary group of the Communist Party (PCRM).
Stanislav Groppa’s documents were lodged by the former presidential adviser, Communist MP Sergiu Stati at 22.55, one hour before the deadline. Groppa was proposed by 15 MPs from the parliamentary group of the PCRM, including two former presidential advisers, Mark Tkachuk and Oleg Reidman, deputy speaker Grigore Petrenco and MP Vadim Misin.
Groppa declared incomes of 246,000 lei earned from January 1, 2008 until May 14, 2009.
The head of state is elected by the vote of three fifth of the elected MPs, i.e. 61 of the 101 MPs that form the legislature.
The Opposition has repeatedly announced it will not put up candidates and will not participate in the election of the head of state. The parliamentary group of the PCRM is composed of 60 MPs and needs one more vote to elect the president.
