Grain prices go up, but bread will not grow more expensive

Grain prices on the world markets have increased suddenly and are expected to grow further. Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vasile Bumacov said that on the home market the grain may also grow dearer because the available volumes are not very large. But the rise will not be essential and will not lead to an increase in bread prices. ”The frost and drought have caused damage not only to Moldova. Our neighbors that are large grain producers were also affected. Our forecasts were gloomy, but the latest rain improved the situation. Some of the districts still experience difficulties because there was no rain or the crops were damaged by hail,” the minister stated for Info-Prim Neo. Vasile Bumacov said they are holding discussions with the administration of the bakery complex “Franzeluta” to identify other ways for raising employees’ salaries than increasing the price of bread. “We have to maintain the bread prices and are looking for possibilities of optimizing costs as nobody is glad when the bread grows more expensive,” he said. Contacted by Info- Prim Neo, the head of the Cooperation Department of the National Farmers Federation of Moldova “AGROinform” Iurie Fala said the grain prices on the domestic market depend on the grain prices in Ukraine, which is the largest grain producer in the southeast of Europe. It has about 2 million hectares of autumn crops and 1.5 million hectares of corn and sunflower fields.
