GPI chief: We want people to feel safe when they see a police officer

Two thirds of the population said they are satisfied with the activity of the community police. Some 26.8% of those polled trust the firefighters the most. 13.2% trust the sector police, 14% the swift response teams (902), while 10.2% the border police, shows a CBS-AXA poll carried out in concert with the General Police Inspectorate (GPI), IPN reports.

“We want the citizens, when they see a police officer on the street, to feel safe and calm,” said the GPI head Alexandru Pinzari, noting that the results of the poll are better than the last data available, of 2013.

“But we will not get drunk with rainwater. We will work out a roadmap to see what we should devote attention to. During the last two years, we staged a number of awareness-raising and communication events for society so as to come closer to the people and see their needs. We studied the practice of a number of states,” stated Pinzari, noting that the equipment and techniques are important, but the success is ensured only if there is good communication with the people.

Attending the presentation of the survey, Steven Daniels, EU Justice and Home Affairs Officer at the European Commission (EU Delegation to Moldova), said the objective is to change the image of the police from a force body to a body that provides services for the people. “The citizens will judge the successes of the police. We want to financially support not only Chisinau, but also other communities, all over Moldova. In Belgium, we started a similar reform in 1998. It took two years to consolidate this reform. In Moldova, it is the same. It won’t be easy, but it is possible,” noted Steven Daniels.

The poll covered three representative samples: young people, the general population and police employees. The data were collected in September – December 2017.
