Government will purchase apartments for Soroca blast victims

The Government on January 16 decided to allocate resources from its Reserve Fund for acquiring apartments for the victims of the Soroca building blast. Initially, the Ministry of Finance proposed allotting 8.612 million lei, but Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev demanded to determine the cost of apartments in Soroca. He said that according to preliminary estimates, the Government should allocate not more than 10 million lei. The Premier said that the authorities took measures to liquidate the consequences of the explosion, but the 30 families have been evacuated and accommodated in the dormitory of the Soroca Arts College as there is no other place available. According to Tarlev, the administration in Soroca town said they can only earmark plots of land on which to build houses. They also organised a drive to raise money. Tarlev said he will advise the Soroca administration to use transparently and efficiently the money collected by fundraising drive and the donations made by employees of ministries and other state organisations and to purchase furniture and other stuff for the apartments that will be bought. Functionaries of the central public administration offered their one-day salary to the Soroca blast victims. A sum of 1.6 million lei was transferred to their account. The Chisinau administration provided 300,000 lei to the victims. The families that lost their apartments, but managed to save a part of the property received by 5,000 lei, while the other families by 10,000 lei. By 15,000 lei was offered to the families of the persons that died in the explosion. The blast in the apartment building located on 117 Stephan the Great Street in Soroca caused the death of four civilians. A fire-fighter died during rescue works.
