Government vows Chisinau will have heat by tomorrow

The Government has assumed the initiative to redress the situation in Chisinau's district heating sector and patch up the frayed relations between the parties involved. In a communique release today by the Government, it is said that “an extraordinary complex of organizational and financial measures has been elaborated, which will allow the provision of the entire city with heat starting tomorrow, 12 November 2008”, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to the press release, “the elaborated measures will remove the effects of the thoughtless actions by the general mayor and will restore the heating sector of the municipality to good functioning”. The Government describes the situation created in the city as “an imminent humanitarian disaster”, which “the Government of the Republic of Moldova cannot watch passively any further”. “Unlike the other settlements in the country where the heating season started on time, the residents of Chisinau have found themselves hostages to the political ambitions and the administrative and economic incompetence of the general mayor”, the communique reads. Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca is further accused of having “carried out a cynical experiment of freezing Chisinau” and of “complete unfamiliarity with how the city's heating sector works”. At publication time (around 2:30PM), the World Bank's Office was hosting a joint meeting between municipal officials, the city's heat supplier Termocom and gas supplier Moldovagaz, as well as representatives of the IMF and WB, dedicated to the situation in Chisinau's district heating sector.
