Government urged Army not to obey its supreme commander, politologist

By approving the decision on the Moldovan service members’ participation in the Rapid Trident military exercise in Ukraine, even if the President banned this, the Government of the Republic of Moldova urged the Army not to obey its supreme commander, which is the President of the Republic of Moldova. The issue was developed in the talk show “Key issue” on NTV Moldova channel, IPN reports.

Politologist Boris Shapovalov said the law on state security clearly provides that the President takes decisions about military exercises and this is his prerogative. “The President stated his position. Whether his arguments can be accepted or not it is something else. In such a case, a Premier who answers for his actions should meet with the President to clarify the positions and how they should act, but should not get into a conflict with the President,” he stated.

Socialist MP Bogdan Tardea said the Government is trying to withdraw the President’s prerogatives as supreme commander of the armed forces. “This is a factor of usurpation of the power, from my viewpoint, and this is not the first. It is a direct collision with the Head of State who was elected by the people, not by a semi-criminal alliance at midnight,” he noted.

Jurist Pavel Midrigan said a Ping-Pong game appeared between the Government and the President when Igor Dodon was elected Head of Statee Hrad. Both the President and the Government have their own powers in relation to the army. The Government’s decision on participation in the military exercise in Ukraine and the President’s order to ban this participation haven’t been published, but these take effect after their publication.
