Government should offer society more information about its financial capacities, opinions

Representatives of civil society ask for more information about the socioeconomic situation in the country. Political commentators consider the authorities should ensure greater transparency in their activities and should more efficiently fight disinformation and fake news. For their part, representatives of the government said that amid the multiple crises experienced by the Republic of Moldova, the authorities are making maximum effort to manage the situation within their financial possibilities, IPN reports.

The head of WatchDog community Valeriu Pașa said that in the context of the war in Ukraine and of the uncertainty generated by the Russian military aggression, the Moldovan authorities should tell society more about the government‘s priorities, the faced risks and the country’s vulnerabilities. The government should promptly react to the avalanche of disinformation that is disseminated in society.

“The government should give more details to society, for example, about the budget constraints that the government definitely has today. We should know what we can afford, what social programs can be continued, what new programs can be introduced. We realize that the specialists from the Cabinet also face difficulties in making economic forecasts. Things are very uncertain and volatile. It depends on how long this war will be and what character it will have. I would like more information to be provided about the funds owned by the Government and about the money it needs. The Government updated its strategy for informing about disinformation, but it should also allocate more resources here,” political commentator Valeriu Pașa stated in the talk show “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

PAS MP Dumitru Alaiba said the Government manages the energy, refugee, higher prices and pandemic crises with maximum responsibility, but its financial capacities are limited.

“I hope the citizens agree with me that in this multitude of crises that weren’t caused by us, only a corrupt Government was missing. I can assure you that effort is being made for these crises to be handled appropriately, but the powers and financial capacities are limited. Efforts are being made to offer subsidies, to do the long-awaited reforms. The energy crisis wouldn’t have struck us so seriously if work had been done during the last 15 years. Even in the current difficult conditions, it is important to accelerate the promised reforms so that we ensure a brighter future for the people,” stated Dumitru Alaiba.

Recently, Minister of Finance Dumitru Budianschi said the war in Ukraine has unfavorable consequences for the economic situation in the Republic of Moldova and the economic growth forecast for 2022 is of only 0.3%. The budget deficit projected at 15 billion lei at the end of last year can exceed 20 billion lei.
