Government reform will be adopted by Parliament by end of current session

The new law on the Government and the law on the modified structure of the Cabinet are to be discussed and adopted by Parliament by the end of the current session, Speaker Andrian Candu, co-chairman of the Democratic Party, said in the press briefing that is held traditionally after the weekly meeting of the party’s administration, IPN reports, quoting a press release of the PDM.

There will be a period of transition until this yearend during which the Government’s 16 ministries will be cut to nine. “This reform was conceived and thought up together with experts of the European Union. Criticizing this reform means criticizing the EU expertise provided to Moldova,” stated Andrian Candu.

Among the subjects discussed in the meeting was the finalization of the development and reform roadmap for the second half of 2017, which is a calendar of activities aimed at bringing Moldova closer to the European standards and at improving the activity of the state. The document is to be signed by the Prime Minister and the Parliament Speaker.

The roadmap contains 57 measures that will be taken in seven areas. “These measures were agreed with the development partners and the IMF and form part of the conditions imposed for providing EU macro-financial assistance. The experience with the first roadmap showed that it is a good instrument for mobilizing all the institutions,” stated Andrian Candu.

The draft law on the Government reform was passed in the first reading by Parliament last Friday. The bill caused heated debates, with the opposition MPs leveling harsh criticism at this. The Communist and Socialist MPs demanded that the draft law should be withdrawn.
