The Moldovans want their country to be in the European Union and this must be reaffirmed and written in the Constitution so that, whoever is in power, the voice of the people for this direction of development is mandatory for the political class. This is one of the reasons why the referendum on European integration should be held now, according to a message distributed by government representatives, IPN reports.

“There are voices that oppose the accession and they falsely declare that the people do not want to join the EU – we must show them that this is the democratic will of the Moldovans. We must not allow thieves who promote falsehoods about the EU, who sell the country and work against Moldova to destroy our future and the present,” reads the message.

One reason to hold the referendum now is the historic opportunity that has been waited for 30 years. “The EU countries want more than ever for Moldova to join the EU (a few years ago EU leaders said that the EU should not expand anymore), and our citizens still want to be part of the EU. This is the moment when we can turn this support into a real step. It is not known when this opening from the outside will ever come again – we must be smart, wise and use this historic moment. Let’s be householders and take care of our country,” reads the Government’s message.

At the same time, as the presidential election of October 20, a national constitutional referendum on Moldova’s accession to the EU will also be held. The citizens will answer the question “Are you for amending the Constitution to stipulate the entry of the Republic of Moldova into the European Union?”.
