The current Government opposes the opening of a branch of the Iasi University “Alexandru Ioan Cuza”. With evident intent, it practically blocks this project that is important for the whole society of the Republic of Moldova, said the head of Orhei district Dinu Țurcanu.
In a news conference at IPN, Dinu Țurcanu noted that last year he agreed with the rector of “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University Dorel Toader to open a branch of the university in Orhei. Dorel Toader visited Orhei town that, according to Dinu Țurcanu, has unique infrastructure in the Republic of Moldova in terms of care, cleanness and equipment, starting from asphalted streets and ending with the conveniences that the municipality offers to all the citizens.
The rector of “A.I.Cuza” University made an approach to the administration of the Teacher Training Coollege “Vasile Lupu” of Orhei, informing about their intention to open this branch and respectfully asking to offer space after the study hours of the college. The same model is applied in Bălți, where there was opened a branch of the Iasi University “A.I.Cuza”. Later, they considered opening the branch in another building. There were identified a number of buildings. The Orhei District Council and the Orhei mayor’s office are ready to allocate funds for opening the branch of “A.I.Cuza” University, stated Dinu Țurcanu.
“We made an approach to the Ministry of Education and this responded that the opening of the branch is not possible as the protocols of cooperation between the Ministries of Education of Moldova and Romania do not envision the inauguration of such a branch,” said the head of Orhei district. He considers the Moldovan Government’s reaction to this bill is nothing but “jealousy combined with bad intention”.
Decision makers from Orhei insisted that the subject should be discussed in the joint meeting of the Governments of Moldova and Romania. In the Government’s meeting, there was signed an agreement of cooperation between the Ministries of Education, which stipulates that the opening of branches of Romanian universities on Moldova’s territory is encouraged. In its response, the minister of education and research of the Republic of Moldova specified that the opening of branches is possible only where there are universities. “If so, only three cities are eligible in the Republic of Moldova – Bălți, the municipality of Chisinau and Cahul,” stated Dinu Țurcanu.
The district head noted that the creation of a branch of “A.I.Cuza” University in Orhei is possible. The Orhei District Council and the Orhei mayor’s office can provide a building for the purpose. Two faculties are to be opened there – food chemistry and geography of tourism.
