Government on full alert over heavy rainfall danger
The Government is on maximum alert as the Hydrometeorology Service forecast torrential rain accompanied by lightning and strong wind for September 13.
The cyclone that hit Moldova on September 11 and 12 left a number of Moldovan settlements in darkness, but did not cause other damage. Yet, Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev warns that there is still a danger of floods.
The Premier said that emergency measures are now taken to reconnect all the settlements to the electric power supply system. He instructed officials of the Ministry of Local Public Administration to set up rescue teams that will intervene in case of emergency situations.
He ordered the cleaning of settlements’ drains, which are blocked and cause floods during heavy rainfall.
Also, Tarlev asked the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Emergency Situations Debarment to be ready to provide help to the people if the dikes break. He expressed his concerns about the condition of the damps in the country. According to him, only one dike broke during the recent rains. No other essential damage was caused. But Moldova has up to 450 lakes and ponds leased out for 99 years and they are in a rather poor condition, the Premier said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
