Government of Moldova negotiates Compact Program in Washington
Moldova could obtain US$262 million in non-reimbursable Compact assistance to repair the roads and switch over to advanced agriculture by this yearend. The negotiations on the Compact agreement are taking place in Washington between November 2 and 6, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting the Government's press service.
The group of negotiators consists of representatives of a number of ministries and the central authorities and of experts of the team that formulated the Compact Program.
The negotiations center on the final content of the agreement, especially general financial and fiscal aspects of the Compact Program, the road rehabilitation project and the centralized irrigation systems rehabilitation project.
After the talks, the agreement is to be approved by the Millennium Challenge Corporation's Board of Directors.
The Government of Moldova will hold an international tender contest to select a company that will act as financial agent and will create the unit responsible for the implementation of the Compact Program for Moldova.
The country proposal for Compact assistance was submitted to the MCC at the end of February 2008. Afterward, it was subjected to an extensive assessment and finalization process.
MCC, an innovative and independent U.S. Government foreign assistance agency, is helping lead the fight against global poverty. Created by the U.S. Congress with strong bipartisan support in 2004, MCC is changing the conversation on how best to deliver U.S. foreign assistance by focusing on good policies, country-led development, and results.
