Government endorses new law on waste

The Cabinet approved a bill on waste that lays down the legal norms, state policies and the measures needed to protect the environment and the population’s health, IPN reports.

Thus, the waste will be managed by methods and procedures that do not endanger the environment, the people’s health and other living things. The collection, transportation, utilization and elimination of waste will be authorized by the competent bodies if these activities do not pose threats to the water, air, land, flora and fauna, do not cause phonic pollution or unpleasant smell and do not affect the landscapes or protected areas.

The bill transposes to the national legislation provisions from EU laws, as provided in the Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement between Moldova and the EU.

The measures stipulated in the bill will contribute to fulfilling the commitments made by Moldova following the ratification of international treaties that lay down waste management requirements, including by regulating and taking measures to ban and/or to restrict the dangerous substances in products or articles.

The draft law also contains provisions that will help optimize the waste management duties of the responsible environment protection institutions.

The bill is to be examined by Parliament.
