The Government of Moldova disfavors the diaspora through the current electoral system, considers Oleg Bînzar, a potential candidate for MP in the single-member constituency that covers the United States and Canada. According to him, the diaspora should get 30% of the seats of MP.

In a news conference at IPN, Oleg Bînzar said that currently, only three of the 101 seats of MP were reserved for the diaspora. “A clear message is transmitted this way - that the diaspora should not be active and should not be actively represented in the legislature,” he stated. Oleg Bînzar also said the diaspora is also discouraged by the fact that it cannot financially support national parties or particular candidates. “If we study attentively the Election Code, we see that particular points restrict or eliminate the possibility for the diaspora, the people who are outside the country to support parties, candidates who are politically active here,” he noted, adding not even the potential candidates from the diaspora are encouraged to take part in the election campaign.

Oleg Bînzar said the politicians from Chisinau should abandon the attitude of “consumer” towards the diaspora. “During 20 years, the politicians from Chisinau waited for money from the diaspora. Now they wait for votes, but they do not show interest in the current needs of the diaspora,” he stated. He also referred to the low number of polling places established abroad and said he considers the introduction of electronic voting is a solution in this regard.

He called on the diaspora to become involved and take part in elections and not to underestimate their vote.

The potential candidate for MP in the parliamentary elections of February 24, 2019 has lived in the U.S. for 20 years and runs building and IT businesses there. In Moldova, he implements charity projects. He is now collecting signatures for being registered as an electoral contender.
