Government decides in favor of extension of state of emergency

The Cabinet on Wednesday approved a draft decision concerning the extension of the state of emergency for another 45 days. The draft decision is to be submitted to Parliament for consideration, IPN reports.

Daniella Misail-Nichitin, secretary of state at the Ministry of the Interior, said that the flow of refugees is now smaller than at the start of the war in Ukraine, but the unpredictable situation in the neighboring country can anytime lead to a larger inflow. The latest data show there are now over 73,000 Ukrainians in Moldova and more than 40,000 of them are children.

The functionary also said that the war affects the commercial ties and logistics chains, including of foods and oil products, overburdening the transport infrastructure in Moldova. Consequently, solutions and measures need to be agreed to strengthen the vital processes in the country and the region. The risks related to the supply of Moldova with electricity, natural gas and fuels persist and the extension of the state of emergency will enable to intervene promptly.

On April 21, at the suggestion of the Commission for Exceptional Situation and the Government, Parliament decided to extend the state of emergency declared on February 24, when the war in Ukraine broke out, for a period of 60 days.
