The Government on February 10 approved the three candidates for judge to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) who were proposed by the candidate selection commission. These are Diana Scobioală, Vladimir Grosu and Nicolae Eșanu, IPN reports.
Outgoing Minister of Justice Fadei Nagacevschi said the three candidates will be presented to the Advisory Panel of Experts on Candidates for Election as Judge to the ECHR. After the Panel states its opinion, the candidates will be presented to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe that will elect the judge to the Court.
The procedure for electing the new judge at the ECHR on behalf of the Republic of Moldova was initiated after the PACE Secretary General Wojciech Sawicki on May 26, 2020 sent a letter informing that the term in office of Moldova’s current judge at the Court Valeriu Gritslo expires on December 2, 2021 and a new judge should be chosen.
In accordance with the European Convention on Human Rights, the national authorities are invited to present a list of three candidates to the Parliamentary Assembly. The PACE Bureau requested the Government of the Republic of Moldova to provide the list by May 10, 2021. The list will be examined and voted on in the PACE session of June 2021.
