Government approves presidential election amendment

The Government has given its approval to an amendment to the Law on Presidential Election which excludes the following sentence from the article enumerating the reasons for delaying a presidential vote: “as well as in the case of other impediments making impossible the conducting of elections for the President of Moldova”, Info-Prim Neo reports. Deputy Justice Minister Vladimir Grosu recalled that in late May the Constitutional Court found that the sentence contradicted the principle of clarity of the law, allowing for discretionary interpretations which could lead to arbitrary delays in electing the President. At the same time, the Court upheld the other objective reasons for which a presidential vote may be delayed: death, sickness, objective impossibility of any presidential candidates or MPs to participate. The amendment is yet to be adopted in Parliament.
