Government approves PCRM's constitutional amendment proposal
The Government approved the proposal to amend article 78 of the Constitution submitted by a group of Communist MPs as legislative initiative, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The PCRM proposes that the President be elected in Parliament by three rounds of voting. If the head of state is not elected by three rounds, the Acting President dissolves the legislative body and calls early legislative elections that must take place within 60 days of the dissolution.
In its note, the Government says the election of the head of state by three rounds is a practice used in some of the European countries. But there is also another proposal to allow for direct election of the head of state as in other countries.
The PCRM's constitutional amendment proposal was earlier approved by the Constitutional Court.
