Government approves of Bashkan’s contribution to strengthening society in Gagauzia

Mihail Formuzal was invested as Governor (Bashkan) of Gagauzia on February 14. Moldova’s Acting President Marian Lupu and Prime Minister Vlad Filat attended the ceremony, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The Government approves of the Governor’s contribution to strengthening Gagauz society and the integrity of the state, the development of the Gagauz language and culture, the studying of the official language in Gagauzia,” said Vlad Filat. He also said that the Governor of Gagauzia, as a member of the Government, asked that money for teaching Romanian language courses to the national minorities be earmarked in this year’s state budget and that the executive adopt a special program in this respect. The Premier stressed that the Moldovans gave a vote of confidence to the ruling alliance, while the Gagauz people gave a vote of confidence to Governor Mihail Formuzal. “This makes us confident and determined to continue the initiated processes. If we are supported by the people, we will be able to make their dreams come true,” said Vlad Filat. In the second round of voting on December 26, Mihail Formuzal beat his main opponent Nicolai Dudoglo, who is the Mayor of Comrat, polling by about 2% of vote more. Nicolai Dudoglo, the movement “Novaya Gagauzia” that he heads and other supporters of the mayor of Comrat do not recognize the election outcome.
