Government approves National Transplant Program for next five years

The number of kidney transplant operations will increase by 60%, while of liver transplants by 45%, IPN reports, quoting the National Transplant Program for 2017 – 2021 approved by the Government. The Ministry of Health aims to annually increase the number of kidney transplants to 50, while of liver transplants to 20.  For the first time, there will be transplanted stem cells and heart valves, IPN reports.

To achieve these objectives, there will be created a Center for Coordinating the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues, which will also provide the health facilities with the necessary medicines and equipment. The capacities of the Transplant Agency will be strengthened, while scientific research in the field of organ and tissue transplant will be stimulated. The population of Moldova will be further informed and educated on transplant matters.

The program will be implemented at a cost of over 400 million lei. The money will be allocated annually.

As many as 22 kidney transplants and 10 liver transplants were performed in Moldova in 2016.
