Government approves bill to amend Article 78 of Constitution

The executive approved the bill to amend Article 78 of the Constitution by referendum so as to allow for direct election of the head of state, Info-Prim Neo reports. Minister of Justice Alexandru Tanase said the bill was submitted as legislative initiative by a group of MPs. On July 6, it was approved by the Constitutional Court and is to be passed today by the Parliament. The lawmakers convened at 17.15. The leader of the Democratic Party asked for a break. Marian Lupu said it would be more reasonable to amend Article 78 in Parliament. He proposed inviting the Communist MPs to the sitting as they expressed their readiness to accept this way. When the news story was published, the MPs were still on a break.
