Government approves 2018-2021 Active Aging Plan

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved an Action Plan regarding the implementation of active aging policies for 2018-2021, IPN reports. The document contains activities that are oriented at improving the quality of life and health for aging seniors.

To that end, it aims at raising sustainability for budgeting social assistance and security programs, as well as healthcare programs for the elderly. Meanwhile, it also strives to give the elderly access to the labor market and to ensure good professional qualification services for those whose over 55 years of age. Other objectives refer to the improvement of the active aging index and a higher degree of representation from the elderly within the decision-making process. Activity costs will be covered by the state budget, as well as from resources offered by development partners.

In a recent analysis, „Expert Grup” Independent Analytical Center experts mention that probability for near-future increases to the index is very low, due to the currently high aging rate. The effect of this parameter will intensify in the near future and will result in downward pressure on the population’s aggregate activity rate. In the medium and long term, the stimulation of job offers might be attained through active aging, as well as through the inclusion to the labor market of underrepresented demographics, i.e. youth and women.
