Government and extraparliamentary opposition with differing opinions after European Moldova Assembly

The European Moldova Assembly was a historic event that demonstrated the Moldovans’ wish to be part of the European family, said secretary of state of the State Chancellery Adrian Băluțel. According to him, the event held last Sunday was a message to the international community about the people’s support enjoyed by the European integration idea. For his part, the chairman of the Party “Dignity and Truth Platform” (PPDA) Dinu Plîngău said that beyond symbolical events, the Moldovan authorities should focus on the solving of the real problems faced by the citizens and on the justice sector reform, IPN reports.

According to the police, the European Moldova Assembly involved 75,000 to 80,000 people. No incident or case of disorderly conduct was reported. Representatives of the government said that these data point to the Moldovans’ extraordinary capacity to mobilize to support the country’s European course.

“There were many attempts by Moscow to give the impression that the European future is not the choice of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova and that we will not succeed in dealing with all the difficulties experienced by the country. The event was meant to show that many people want this country to succeed and are ready to unite around the European integration idea not to support the destabilization of the situation. Therefore, the assembly was apolitical. The last stage of the European integration process implies validation by referendum or by another democratic exercise. Respectively, for the European Union not only the option of the ruling party matters. It is very important to demonstrate the people’s support,” MP of the ruling party PAS Adrian Băluțel stated in the program “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

The chairman of the PPDA said the beauty of the European Moldova Assembly is overshadowed by the government’s reduced capacity to reform the justice sector and this fact was mentioned in the report produced by the Council of Europe’s Group of States against Corruption (GRECO).

“The next day after that event, we witnessed a blow given to democracy and the justice sector reform. It goes to the validation of the election in Gagauzia after all the scandals that were denounced by our authorities. We have the GRECO report. The government here cannot reproach the opposition for criticizing groundlessly. The GRECO report shows that we fail in a number of regards and have serious shortcomings. This means that we must ensure the processes are more transparent as there is criticism, including of the way in which laws are adopted in Parliament. I would also note the way in which high-ranking posts in the justice system were validated,” stated Dinu Plîngău.

At the end of the European Moldova Assembly, the participants adopted a resolution by which they ask to establish the European integration desideratum in the Constitution, to
open the accession negotiations, to resolutely condemn the illegal and inhumane war started by Russia in Ukraine, to improve the citizens’ quality of life.
