Going abroad is most common reason why children abandon school
The parents more often take their children with them when going abroad to work, this being the most common reason for school abandonment in Moldova. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, Deputy Minister of Education Tatiana Potang said that these children probably go to school in the countries where they are now. The Moldovan authorities cannot monitor this aspect and thus the children are put into the category of those who abandon school.
After data is collected about school abandonment, a commission is constituted at district level, consisting of the local police officer and a social assistant. They visit these families and determine the reasons why the children do not go to school. Solutions are identified, depending on the situation. According to the latest data of the Ministry of Education, 147 children left school during the current academic year. 40 of them are Roma ethnics. Among other reasons that lead to school abandonment are poverty, begging, incurable diseases, and failure to make progress at school.
Children’s ombudswoman Tamara Plamadeala has told Info-Prim Neo that the parents’ migration has one more aspect. The children are left without supervision or in the care of grandparents or relatives that do not always look after them. As they enjoy freedom, the children decide not to go to school. This leads to aggression among minors. The children may join groups of children with inappropriate behavior. The ombudswoman considers that the best solution is for the central authorities to work out policies to create workplaces so as to prevent migration.
