Godea: Attacks on Constitutional Court are aimed at exerting pressure on judges
Unaffiliated MP Mihai Godea said the attacks mounted by the opposition on the Constitutional Court are aimed at exerting pressure on the Court’s judges. “When the judges take a decision, they must bear in mind that the opposition not only criticizes them, but also intends to break up the Court, as the opposition stated recently,” Mihai Godea said in a meeting of the Press Club, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
He said that during the next half a year or a year, the Constitutional Court will play an important role. “Until the political actions do not produce results, representatives of the political class may ask the Court to interpret something and pass judgments and the reasons for such an ultimate attack by the opposition on the Constitutional Court are evident,” said Mihai Godea.
According to him, there are certain questions as regards the legality of the constitutional referendum that the ruling alliance intends to hold.
Mihai Godea said he does not know if there are other examples when the Constitution is amended by referendum without voter turnout threshold, but the logic opposes such an attempt.
“It is a matter concerning the supreme law, not an ordinary problem. Many politicians and analysts are discussing the possibility of applying the referendum results in the current or next Parliament. They also analyze if the law has retroactive power or not and other issues. The Constitutional Court plays an important role in this respect. That’s why they fight for it,” said the lawmaker.
As to the decision to show the ballots in the December 16 presidential elections, the lawmaker said that he did not want to take part in that absurdity.
Recently, the Communist parliamentary group condemned the Constitutional Court’s decision whereby it invalidated the December 16 presidential elections. Representatives of the PCRM said the court became a political and corrupt institution for which the fulfillment of orders became a priority. In the current composition, it lost its constitutional jurisdiction authority and by its acts discredited itself before the people. The PCRM demands that the judges who were accomplices in the usurpation of state power should resign immediately.
