A 19-year-old Straseni girl was killed by a drunk driver who fled the scene after the accident. Chisinau Traffic Police Inspector Ion Roscovanu told Info-Prim Neo that the accident occurred Wednesday at 6:30 pm on Alba Iulia Street in Chisinau’s Buiucani district. The 19-year-old Cristina Svet of Straseni was crossing the street legally when a Ford-Transit van with Criuleni plates, driven by a 37-year-old man, hit the girl at high speed. The victim died on the scene. The driver tried to escape punishment but ran out of luck when a crew of the State Security Dpt. stopped him for crossing at red light some hundreds of meters from the scene. At a closer look, the police officers detected signs of an accident involving a pedestrian and found that the man was under the influence of alcohol. In 10 months of this year the capital city saw 546 road accidents that involved pedestrians, which is 53.5 percent of the total. To redress the situation, the Traffic Police kicked off today the special campaign called “The Pedestrian”.
