Ghimpu's meeting with Communist lawmakers has failed

Speaker Mihai Ghimpu and the lawmakers of the Communist parliamentary faction have failed to reach consensus at a meeting they had Tuesday afternoon. The Communists told Ghimpu they would stop boycotting meetings in Parliament only when the current legislative was dissolved and early elections were called. Mihai Ghimpu, on the other hand, says he won't agree to dissolve the parliament and announce snap elections before June 16, at the expiry of one year since the dissolution of the previous legislative, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Communist lawmakers invited Mihai Ghimpu to the negotiation table to discuss the terms of their return to the sessions of Parliament and its commissions. The meeting was the initiative of Communist leader Vladimir Voronin himself, who nevertheless failed to attend. The Communists insisted the speaker would tell them when Parliament would be dissolved and early elections would be announced. “There are no legal alternatives to the dissolution of the parliament. Any variant proposed by whatever super expert to avoid this reality is just not possible. We ask you to tell in public the date of the parliament's dissolution and the date of the early elections. Only then will our factions return to the sessions”, declared MP Vadim Misin. “It wouldn't be right, legally speaking, to talk about dissolution until June 16. That's what the Constitution says, not Ghimpu”, said the speaker. The Communist MPs wondered when they could have their official cars back at their disposal. “When you'll join us for the sessions”, was the answer. Mihai Ghimpu was also asked about when the Parliament building and the Presidential Parliament would be repaired, because, according to MP Iurie Stoianu, the lawmakers felt uncomfortable in their current offices. “You destroyed the buildings, you were responsible for keeping them. Now with the rampant economic crisis and the legacy you left behind, what finish date are you talking about?”, fumed Ghimpu. Stoicov replied that the buildings would have been already fit for exploitation had the Communists remained in power. At the end of the meeting, Maria Postoico, the head of the Communist parliamentary faction, said Mihai Ghimpu gave evasive answers to all their questions. “We didn't find out what are the next steps, what are to expect”, said Postoico. MP Vadim Misin added that the faction would decide soon whether to return to the sessions or not. “I accepted the invitation of Vladimir Voronin and here I am, but what do you expect me to say further when your leader didn't care to join in. I answered clearly all the questions. I told them that I had no intention of retaining power beyond what the Constitution says”, Mihai Ghimpu said.
