Ghimpu wants to keep his special car plates
Moldovan acting President and Speaker Mihai Ghimpu says the Government cannot decide for him whether he can use a car with special plates or not. His statement comes after the Government decided the President, the Speaker, the Prime Minister and other officials shall not have special car plates.
Mihai Ghimpu explained this decision didn’t affect him, but he would check the rules of protocol. “I will examine this issue and if there’s no need for these plates, I’ll make a decision. However, it is not the Government that decides for me”, he said. Mihai Ghimpu added that the Government could even be forced to annul its decision as it didn't have the power to give orders to the Presidency or Parliament.
Mihai Ghimpu also thinks that dignitaries could profit from this decision during election campaigns because it will be hard to accuse them of using public resources in political purposes if people can’t make a difference whether the officials are using their private car or the official one.
