The leader of the Liberal Party (PL) Mihai Ghimpu, Acting President of Moldova, claims damages of 1 leu from the former head of state, Communist leader Vladimir Voronin, for slander and damaging of honor and professional dignity during the April 2009 events. At the same time, Voronin demands 1 million from Ghimpu for making denigrating statements against him. The PCRM seeks the same amount, Info-Prim Neo reports. The first hearing in the lawsuit filed by Mihai Ghimpu and deputy chairman of the Liberal Party Dorin Chirtoaca, the Mayor of Chisinau, took place on September 16. The Liberals sued Vladimir Voronin, the former head of the Security and Information Service Artur Reshetnikov and former Prosecutor General Valeriu Gurbulea for accusing the PL and other Opposition parties of staging the April 7 violent protests, in the film “Attack on Moldova”. The Liberals also sued the TV channels NIT, EuTV, N4 and Prime for broadcasting this film, which the PL considers denigrating. The PCRM’s jurist Sergiu Sarbu and Artur Reshetnikov’s lawyer Veaceslav Mata submitted an application to the court, demanding that the plaintiffs deny publicly the denigrating statements against Voronin and Reshetnikov. The lawyers said the denigrating statements were made in the film “The Truth about April 7”, which was made by the PL, according to them. Reshetnikov’s representative asked only for public apologies, while Sergiu Sarbu said both Vladimir Voronin and the PCRM claim by 1 million lei damages. According to Sarbu, the money will be used for charity purposes. The judge accepted the lawyers’ applications. The hearing was postponed to October 20 and 25. Mihai Ghimpu expressed his dissatisfaction with the delaying of the trial, saying he filed the lawsuit on June 12, 2009. “I ask 1 leu from Voronin because this is his worth. He wants 1 million lei from me. Perhaps he is poor. I will not give him money because he is not right,” Mihai Ghimpu told the reporters. Asked if the film “The Truth about April 7” was made by the PL, Mihai Ghimpu said the situation is yet to be clarified.
