Historian and political journalist Gheorghe Cojocaru said that following the assurances made at all the decision-making levels that this autumn’s presidential elections will take place on time, it seems that the interested players should become actively involved in the election preparation campaign. In an interview for Radio Free Europe, the historian said the political life in Moldova continues to look like non-turbid water, either because these preparations take place somewhere in the basement and cannot be openly seen or not even the torrential rain of the last few days could wake up the several political leaders with particular political weight, IPN reports.
Gheorghe Cojocaru considers that particular statements are made for testing the people’s reaction because the party leaders do not show that they are really interested in a coalition around the powerful candidates on the part of the opposition or, on the contrary, on the part of the authorities. “It is even more curious that some of the leaders who appeared as a result of the protests venture to support a common candidate of the right and of the left, enchanted that they marched together on the streets of Chisinau, but recommend the practice of cooperation in front of microphones in the Square and entrance of a common electoral dance. It can be yet easily anticipated that the common candidate of this cooperation will have no chance to represent the protesting right,” he stated.
Asked what will happen to the other parties of the right if a part of them combine with a part of the left, the historian said that in this case the right will not only put itself in a dangerous situation, but will also discredit itself and risk disappearing after the announcement of the results of the future elections. “In such a case, the candidate of the unaffiliated right will have to face the common candidate of the left and the other cooperationist rights. This will confuse even more the electors who traditionally vote the forces of the right. Such a development will bring to an end the political career of some of the players or, on the contrary, will show their real face,” stated Gheorghe Cojocaru.
He also said that the whole political class now goes through a difficult process of re-modeling and position changing, when the authentic leaders are in great demand. In such a situation, a clear answer should be given to the question if the one that will eventually succeed Nicolae Timofti as President will be better than this or will become a destabilizing and tense factor.
