Germany’s support for Moldova’s European integration efforts strengthens capacity to ensure peace, Nicu Popescu

The Republic of Moldova and Germany are firmly attached to the European values. Germany’s support for Moldova’s European integration efforts strengthens the state’s capacity to ensure liberty, stability and peace in Moldova, Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, stated in a news conference in Chisinau. This year it has been 30 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Moldova and Germany, IPN reports.

“Several days ago, the Republic of Moldova submitted an application to join the European Union. The Republic of Moldova is a European state with a European history and with a European language. Our Romanian language is already one of the official languages of the European Union. We are firm in our intention to continue the Europeanization of the state, to prepare it for entry into the European Union. In this regard, despite the regional situation, we reiterated the strong commitment to continue the reform process, to fight corruption, to develop infrastructure, to strengthen democracy so as to ensure decent living conditions for our citizens and for the citizens of other states, primarily the Ukrainian refugees who fled from the war and found refuge in our country. We continue banking on good cooperation relations with Germany, which always supported our efforts to transform and modernize the country,” said Nicu Popescu.

He noted that Germany is one of the main commercial partners of the Republic of Moldova. Important German companies invested a lot in Moldova and created jobs and the Government wants this economic relationship to be further developed.

The official voiced hope that Moldova will be able to extend cooperation with the EU, including by eliminating the quantitative restrictions stipulated in the Moldova-EU Association Agreement.

Nicu Popescu said the Government of the Republic of Moldova continues the dialogue with the German authorities so as to facilitate interaction between the two societies, including on such subjects as continuous liberalization of the process of changing driver’s licenses in Germany, recognition of documents of study and liberalization of roaming changes with all the EU member states.

In the same news conference, Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany Annalena Baerbock said that the European Union offers €5 million in immediate support to the Republic of Moldova, while the Government of Germany provides another €3 million for managing the refugee crisis and for supporting the economy, besides the €37 million in economic support for this year that was already planned.
