Germany urges AEI to 'wake up'
Germany calls upon the Alliance for European Integration (AEI) and the Moldovan voters to realize the crucial importance of the November 28 parliamentary elections for the country's future. Such a call was made by Markus Meckel, a member of the Administration Board of the Moldovan-German Forum, the last Foreign Minister of the German Democratic Republic, one of the founders of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, and a member of the Bundestag during 20 years, in a meeting with reporters last Friday, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Markus Meckel, who a year ago delivered a speech themed “Wake-up, Moldova” in Chisinau, approved of the beneficial changes implemented by the present administration, but expressed readiness to develop the idea by a new discourse themed “Wake-up, Alliance!”
“I realize that the form and structure of the current coalition is not the best. I see the mutual trust between the leaders of the alliance does not increase, but diminishes. But I consider a new, similar alliance is crucial for Moldova. I urge the alliance partners not to struggle between them in the election campaign, but find a method of cooperating for the sake of democracy and the country's future. Only working together can they improve things and continue to enjoy the EU's support,” Markus Meckel said.
Asked by Info-Prim Neo if the EU does not consider it necessary to address directly the population of Moldova in order to avoid possible dangers, following the clear message of support to the present administration delivered by several European missions to Chisinau two weeks ago, Markus Meckel said the ball is now in Moldova's court. “You have different forces that take decisions. The media is a force and you should send a clear message. We cannot do more than we did. I think the people should understand that the coming elections are crucial.
“It will be a serious challenge for the alliance. Despite the accomplishments achieved, the ruling alliance made mistakes. The Prime Minister should behave like a partner. An alliance can exist only when the members of the alliance are treated as partners. A fair and correct partnership will lay the foundations of a future alliance. The Democratic Party should remain a member of this alliance. There is no other way out. I think it is very important that the leaders of the alliance, during the weeks that remained until the elections, convey the message that the partnership will continue after the elections,” the German official said.
Attending the meeting with the journalists, German Ambassador to Moldova Berthold Johannes said unprecedented support is now offered to Moldova to help it cope with the faced challenges. It is absolutely curial for the Moldovan people to take part in the forthcoming elections and choose a new government that will be representative and will continue the initiated reforms, he stressed.
