Germany supports Moldova’s European path

Germany supports Moldova in its European integration and national reintegration process, stated German Foreign Minister and Vice-Chancellor Guido Westerwelle, at a briefing held together with Moldovan PM Vlad Filat on Friday, June 25, Info-Prim Neo reports. “It is for the first time over the last 20 years an important German dignitary visits our country. The discussion we had proves the constructive relationship between our countries”, Vlad Filat stated. Speaking about the Transnistrian issue, the German official said it was important to restart the 5+2 negotiations, halted in 2006. Germany would treat this issue carefully, considering the Russian-German memorandum signed on June 5, added Westerwelle. Asked when Moldova would be able to apply for EU membership, the German Foreign Minister explained this process must be developed step by step and all the necessary reforms must be implemented. Moldovan PM Vlad Filat stressed it depended on the Chisinau government to meet all the EU requirements and standards. Only after this is done, Moldova will be able to apply for EU membership. Guido Westerwelle stressed the start of the negotiations regarding visa regime liberalization between Moldova and EU was “a great success of Moldova’s efforts within the Eastern Partnership”.
