Germany contributes to training of competitive journalists in Moldova

The mass media landscape is a very dynamic one and the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Sciences of the State University of Moldova (USM) wants to prepare professional journalists who will be able to adjust themselves to the new realities and will be competitive abroad too. The cooperation and experience exchange with foreign partners is essential in this respect, Dean Georgeta Stepanov said when presenting a Moldovan-German cooperation project.

“The Faculty is always making effort to put into practice proposals coming from outside. Today we are glad that we can speak about really efficient cooperation. The Faculty of Journalism and Communication Sciences is taking part in several projects implemented with the support of the Government or different German agencies. This is not accidental because of all the offers we had, we chose those of the most credible partners from institutions that ensure the highest quality of the media products,” Georgeta Stepanov said in a news conference at IPN.

She explained that Germany is an appropriate partner also because many TV channels implement the German journalistic production standards. “What we do perfectly fits the needs of the local media outlets. As a result of this cooperation, many of our students become probationers at different TV channels. This shows once again that the potential of our students meets the needs,” stated Georgeta Stepanov.

According to her, the experience of the previous Moldovan-German cooperation projects had effects even inside the faculty. The education program was modified and there was instituted a TV workshop.

“The USM in general and the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Sciences in particular have two objectives: to improve the transfer of professional formation services and to open the faculties by such kind of cooperation so as to have access to the international market. At our faculty, the professional formation strategy is based on student-centered learning, as a journalist without personality is not a journalist. On the other hand, the faculty permanently revises its strategies and techniques so as to adjust them to the market needs,” said Georgeta Stepanov.

The project announced today, October 17, includes a three-month training course on video-journalism taught by German teachers. The course will be attended by 12 students from Moldova and will end with an experience exchange with students of the Journalism Faculty of the University of Bremen. The project is implemented by the South East German Media Agency in cooperation with the Faculty of Journalism, being financed by the Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany from the funds of the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe.
