Germany confirms it contributed to signing of Moldovan-Romanian border treaty

“The relations between Moldova and the EU see a very positive dynamic and this is said in the Conclusions of the European Council on Foreign Relations and confirmed by Germany’s relations with Moldova,” Cristoph Israng, the head of the Southeastern Europe Division of the Federal Chancellery of Germany, said during the Forum of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation that was held in Chisinau. The Forum centered on the accomplishments and challenges faced by Moldova while negotiating the Association Agreement with the EU and the bilateral relations between the two countries, Info-Prim Neo reports. “Germany supports Moldova’s efforts not only by contributing to the EU budget, but also at bilateral level. There are many advisers, projects, assistance programs that the Government of Germany supports and implements in concert with the Government of Moldova,” said the German official. He stressed that Germany is concerned about the resolution of the Transnistrian conflict. “We aimed to include Transnistria in Europe’s agenda and achieved this objective. We hope that progress will be made following the OSCE Summit that will take place in Astana,” Cristoph Israng said. According to him, the Transnistrian dispute was discussed in the context of the signing of the Moldovan-Romanian border treaty. “We discussed the issue with Romanian President Traian Basescu and after seven years of talks the agreement was signed. The Government of Moldova can do a lot and started to take action. Thus, by implementing reforms and coming closer to the EU, Moldova will become more attractive for other countries and for the people living on the left bank of the Nistru,” the official said. He stated that the EU and Germany avoid importing territorial conflicts in the EU. “This means that we will not allow another Cyprus case and that Serbia must solve its Kosovo problem,” Cristoph Israng said. Speaking about the next steps that will be taken in the relations between Moldova and the EU and Germany, including in the liberalization of the visa regime and the signing of the deep and comprehensive free trade agreement, the German official said that many things will become clearer after the November 28 elections. “We expect that the elections will be free and fair. We hope that the new government will continue to cooperate with the EU,” said Cristoph Israng. Holger Dix, the head of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Moldova and Romania, said two representative phenomena give Moldova certain chances of coming closer to the EU. “On November 9, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation together with other partners organized a meeting themed “The European Discourse”. The main speaker, the President of the European Council Herman von Rompuy, spoke about the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, saying the entire Europe was behind this curtain until 1989. “After 1989, Europe came out and entered the stage in order to make its voice heard,” Herman von Rompuy said. He stressed that a new EU enlargement wave requires political courage from both of the sides. “The candidate countries must fulfill all the conditions to be accepted, while the pro-European parties and governments should not lose their enthusiasm. This is important for Moldova,” Holger Dix stated. “The Konrad Adenauer Foundation carried out a number of polls in Germany and published the results in October 2010. 64% of the Germans are interested in the events taking place in the countries that border the EU. This is the highest percentage ever recorded by the Foundation. In 1984-2000, this percentage was much lower. The European policy is now considered much more important. In 1989, 26% of the Germans said they are concerned with the European policy, while in 2010 this figure was twice larger – almost 55%. That anti-European position is no more felt in Germany and the Germans are contented that they are in the EU,” said Cristoph Israng. The Konrad Adenauer Foudnation had opened its office in Moldova in November 2009.
