German soldiers killed in battle on Moldova's territory commemorated

German soldiers who were killed in batlle on the territory between the Nistru and Prut Rivers during World War II were commemorated by relatives who came from Germany to the Cemetery of German Soldiers in Chisinau on October 8. The commemoration ceremony started with laying of flowers, which was followed by a religious service, IPN reports.

Germany's Ambassador to Moldova Ulrike Knotz said that peace is not something you wish for and everyone must make effort and contribute to a world where reason and compassion triumph over destructive selfishness that, regretfully, forms part of the human nature.

"The Republic of Moldova recently marked 25 years of independence. From the beginning, it had to cover a diffcult path, including violent conflicts. Today is not easy either. On the contrary, difficult problems related to the own past add to these. Possibly namely this experience related to the past helped us find in the Republic of Moldova such an open partner for the German People's Union for the Care of War Graves," stated Ulrike Knotz.

According to the announced data, over 5,000 German soldiers were buried in Chisinau. There are suspicions that about 25,000 unidentified German soldiers were buried on Moldova's territory.

The German People's Union for the Care of War Graves cares for the graves of 2.3 million soldiers in 827 cemeteries from 45 countries.
