George W. Bush: Croatia, Macedonia and Albania must become full members of NATO

NATO officials show themselves confident as to Albania’s, Croatia’s and Macedonia’s accession to the North-Atlantic Alliance, Info-Prim Neo’s correspondent accredited at the Bucharest summit reports. "I firmly believe that Croatia, Macedonia and Albania must become full members of NATO”, US President George Bush has said at a news conference on Tuesday, April 2, at Neptun, in Constanta county. According to George Bush, Ukraine and Georgia must also be supported. The same position has been shared by NATO’s secretary general Jaap de Hoop Scheffer in statements made in Bucharest on the same day. The official has said NATO’s expansion won’t cease after the Bucharest summit. Regardless of the decision to be taken concerning Ukraine and Georgia at the reunion, both countries have a place to integrate into NATO, provided they observe the standards required. “There is a variety of opinions which should not hinder the discussions. However the position adopted by the allies will be unitary. Yet no agreements have been reached. The summit as such has not begun yet”, NATO’s spokesman, James Appathurai, has said concerning the chances of adhesion of those two countries, at a news conference in the Cotroceni Palace this afternoon. According to the US President, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro should also work to become NATO members. “We are open to work also with Serbia," George Bush said at Neptun. According to NATO officials, the imperative of the next two days is to find an answer to the degree to which NATO will know to cope with the security requirements demanded by the 21st century. “We’ve made important progress since the Riga summit”, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer has said, specifying there is a frame for the Bucharest summit to be a success. He has underlined the need of consolidating NATO’s relations with the EU, which he has described as hesitating for the time being. Another important issue for the debates is going to be the global partnership. “I want to see the allies united not only in rhetoric, but also in action”, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer concluded.
