The General Prosecutor’s Office demanded that the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC) suspend the head of the Public Transport and Communications Division Veaceslav Tarna from post as he is suspected of misuse of power, the Office’s spokeswoman Maria Vieru has told Info-Prim Neo. At Thursday’s meeting of the CMC, municipal councilor Oleg Onishchenko said that Veaceslav Tarna misused 50,000 lei from the municipal budget. The acting prosecutor of Chisinau also said that an important sum of money was used illegally, but did not specify what sum. Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca told the press that the case opened against Veaceslav Tarna is an attempt to settle accounts with him because he does not agree with a contest by which to name new administrators of minibus routes. Dorin Chirtoaca said the commission for holding the contest, which is headed by Oleg Onishchenko, is corrupt. “They try to name route administrators in a mafia-like style. Thousands of people, including transporters and persons that work in the area, are affected. They claim there were bought dockets for the activity of the minibuses, but this has nothing to do with what happens in this field,” the mayor said. The contest was held on May 12, but the results have not been made public yet. For his part, Oleg Onishchenko said it was not settling of accounts because the accusations against Tarana are based on violations that he committed in 2007. “The commission of which I am a member cannot influence the municipal Prosecutor’s Office as it is a public body,” the councilor said. Spokeswoman Maria Vieru confirmed that the application was lodged with the CMC and that the legal case was opened. She also said that they are now considering the next steps to be taken. Veaceslav Tarna is now on sick leave.
