General local elections might be held on June 3
The general local elections are scheduled for June 3, 2007, according to a decision draft published on the Moldovan Parliament’s official webpage www.parlament.md.
The draft comes from MPs Eugenia Ostapciuc, Vlad Cubreacov, Serafim Urecheanu, Vlad Filat and Iurie Rosca.
A number of parties announced their intention to participate in these elections. Particular attention is paid to the elections of the general mayor of Chisinau municipality.
Until now, several parties have already announced their candidates for the position of mayor of Chisinau municipality. The Liberal Party will field Dorin Chirtoaca, Democratic Party - Vlad Filat, Social-Democratic Party - Eduard Musuc. The Coordination Council of Chisinau Municipal Organisation of the Liberal National Party fielded the candidacy of the party’s leader Vitalia Pavlicenco. At the same time, leader of Social Democracy Party Dumitru Braghis stated earlier that he does not exclude his participation in the Chisinau elections, while Serafim Urecheanu, head of “Moldova Noastra” Alliance voiced his readiness to run for the position of mayor if his opponents would be Premier Vasile Tarlev or President Vladimir Voronin. According to some unconfirmed information, the Communist Party could propose for the office of city mayor the interim mayor Veaceslav Iordan. Also, some assume that the Christian Democratic People’s Party will field Alexandru Corduneanu, incumbent deputy mayor of Chisinau municipality.
The last general local elections were held on May 25, 2003.
