Gender proponents demand gender expertise for all pieces of legislation

More than 100 NGO representatives in Moldova participated on Wednesday and Thursday, August 1-2, at the works of the Forum “Consolidating the national mechanism for gender equality promotion through building on partnerships”. They demanded the Parliament to provide gender expertise for all pieces of legislation which will be adopted and the formation of a sub-commission specialised on such issues within the Commission for Human Rights. The limited financial resources, lacking coordination between minsteries and the insufficient collaboration with civil society, represent the main obstacles in promoting equal opportunities for men and women – stated Lilia Pascal, head of the Department for equal opportunities and violence prevention of the Ministry for Social Protection, Family and Child (MPSFC). “There is no interest shown, nor desire in politics to promote equality between men and women in the Republic of Moldova”, the executive director of the Centre “Partnership for Development”, Daniela Terzi-Barbarosie, member of the governmental Commission for equality between men and women, told Info-Prim Neo. Valentina Bodrug-Lungu, gender expert, believes that in the composition of the Governmental Commission, NGO representatives should be given 50% of the available seats, while candidates should be proposed by the Forum of Civil Society Organisation. Currently, of 22 members of the governmental Commission, only 3 are representatives of non-governmental organisation. The Forum “Consolidating the national mechanism for gender equality promotion through building on partnerships” was organised by the MPSFC and the the United Nations Development Fund for Women, UNIFEM, with the financial support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).
