Gender Equality Platform deplores low presence of women on Cabinet

The Gender Equality Platform said it is concerned about the fact that the new Cabinet includes only two women. This is defiance of the national and international commitments to promote gender equality in the decision-making process. The Platform made a call to the state authorities to obey the 40% gender equality quota on the Cabinet and in the executive teams of miniseries so that at least four women are included in these, IPN reports.

“We consider this is undemocratic and the women in the Republic of Moldova continue to be underrepresented. This is a serious violation by the Government of the legislation of the Republic of Moldova, which guarantees the balanced representation of men and women in executive posts. Moreover, this is regression in fulfilling the national and international commitments on gender equality,” says the call.

Continuing to ignore the gender dimension and not to obey the gender equality quota, the Government contributes to the perpetuation of patriarchal society and to the exclusion of women from decision-making processes.

The new composition of the Cabinet approved by Parliament on July 21 includes two women – Minister of Education, Culture and Research Monica Babuc and Minister of Health, Labor and Social Protection Stela Grigoras.
