Gays give up parade

The homosexuals in Moldova will not stage a parade this year. Alexei Marcicov, the head of the information center GenderDoc-M, told a news conference on Tuesday that the decision is a form of protest against the violation of the right to assembly, Info-Prim Neo reports. The parade was to be held during the “Rainbow over the Nistru – 2009” festival that will take place between May 7 and 9. “What happened on April 6 and especially 7 convinced us that in case of danger, as last year, the police will not help and protect us from extremists as the legislation provides,” Alexei Marcicov said. The organizers also said that they do not want to transform the event into a farce. “The new legislative power, whose attention we wanted to direct to our problems, has not been formed yet. Therefore, the message of our event will not be heard,” said Boris Balanetkii, the executive director of GenderDoc-M. As in the previous years, the festival will be opened on May 7 with a concert where there will be awarded the winners of the contest of most tolerant public personalities. The international transvestite beauty contest Miss Flawless Queen – 2009 will take place on May 9. The program of the festival also includes debates on the development of the women’s movement in the post-Soviet area. The participants will lay flowers to the Memorial to Repression Victims. Attending the conference, the American doctor Paul Cameron, an opponent of homosexuality, asked the festival organizers why they do not try to encourage the members of GenderDoc-M to contain their desires and lead a normal live given the demographic crisis in Moldova. He also said that the homosexuals are dangerous as they can transmit HIV. Indignant, Alexei Marcicov said that the general human problems should not be solved this way. He reiterated that the homosexuals are discriminated in different spheres of life and that they will insist on the adoption of the law on discrimination. Last year, the May 11 pride parade of gays and lesbians was foiled by counter-protesters. The police did not intervene. The parade participants were blocked in the bus and mistreated. The police consider the acts were within the laws on police and on freedom of assembly.
