The local councils of the settlements of the Autonomous Unit of Gagauzia are holding special meetings centering on the autonomous unit’s prospects of gaining independence from Moldova. The press service of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia informed that the first meeting that was held on August 21 by the councilors of Congazcic village of Comrat district involved Gagauz deputies Ivan Burgudji and Zahar Mitul, IPN reports.
The meeting examined the call of the residents of Gagauzia, who asked that the local deputies, in the negotiations with the Moldovan authorities, ensure the implementation of the Law on the Special Legal Status of Gagauzia, which, according to them, is violated by the central authorities. Otherwise, the Gagauz councilors, by December 2015, will organize a referendum on the region’s territory to ask the residents to state their view on Gagauzia defecting from Moldova and joining the Customs Union and on the European integration.
After the people’s call was examined, the councilors of Congazcic decided to call an assembly with the villagers after August 29 to discuss the given issue.
The call was made at the end of July. According to the head of the People’s Assembly Dmitry Constantinov, over 6,000 signatures of the region’s inhabitants were collected in support of the call.
