Gagauzia deputies' congress has only political goals, says WatchDog.MD

Today's Congress of Deputies from Gagauzia is not about the rights of the Gagauz people but serves political purposes aimed at blackmailing Chisinau, says historian Dr. Stefan Bejan, an expert from the WatchDog.MD Community. According to Bejan, Șor and his affiliates are behind this initiative, seeking not to defend Gagauz rights but to prove their worthiness for financial support from the Kremlin, IPN reports.

One of the congress’s demands is to ensure a parliamentary quota for the region, despite the Gagauz making up only 3% of the country's population. In reality, the current parliament already has four deputies from Gagauzia, Bejan noted.

“If there were a quota, it would mean three Gagauz deputies in the Chisinau parliament. However, the current parliament has four deputies from Gagauzia: Feodor Gagauz, Alexandr Suhodolschi, Ivana Koksal, and Vladimir Odnostalco,” the expert explained.

In the previous legislature, there were five deputies from Gagauzia, and between 2014 and 2019, also five.

“No one in the Republic of Moldova violates the rights and freedoms of the residents of the autonomous region. The purpose of this meeting is political. We know that Șor has seized power in Gagauzia and uses it as a tool against Chisinau. Shor, Constantinov, Gutul, and others have no interest in defending Gagauz rights; they need to show that they deserve the money they receive from the Kremlin,” commented WatchDog.MD expert Stefan Bejan.
