Gagauzia claims quota in Moldova’s Parliament

The People’s Assembly of Gagauzia submitted a legislative initiative to Moldova’s Parliament, asking making changes to the Electoral Code. According to the press service of the People’s Assembly, the amendments provide for the allocation of five seats in the country’s supreme legislative body to representatives from Gagauzia, IPN reports.

The legislative initiative was formulated by the legal commission of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia. According to the authors, the current electoral system of Moldova does not stipulate that the people from Gagauzia must be represented in Parliament and must take part in the process of governing the country.

The proposed amendments envision the creation of a legal mechanism for ensuring the representation of Gagauzia in Moldova’s legislature by constituting five uninominal districts in the autonomous region for electing five MPs – by one in every district – by a majority of votes.

The authors of the legislative initiative also say that five seats should be allocated for Gagauzia in Parliament because the Gagauz people represent about 5% of Moldova’s population.
