The executive committee of Gagauzia is drafting a decision according to which the conscript soldiers from the autonomous unit will do their military service in the military unit based in Comrat. The information was made public in a working meeting of the Gagauz executive on November 11, IPN reports.
According to the Governor of Gagauzia Mihail Formuzal, the bill does not provide that the military service will be mandatorily done in Gagauzia. The future soldiers will be able to choose where to do their service.
“Surely, we cannot ban the recruits from serving in the border guard troops for example or in other regions of the country. This right must be guaranteed,” said Formuzal.
The discussions on the necessity of the Gagauz young men doing their military service in the autonomous unit intensified in the region after the tragedy of end-October, when a National Army conscript from the Gagauz village Copceac died as a result of gunshot wounds.
