The head of the Land Relations and Cadaster Service and secretary of the special commission for examining applications of victims of political repression of the Rascani District Council was arrested by the police on corruption-related charges. The woman is suspected of embezzling about 42% of the sum of 581,000 lei allocated by the Ministry of Finance to the Rascani District Council for paying compensations to victims of political repression, IPN reports.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, the functionary asked for money from inhabitants of Rascani district, who are victims of political repression, for facilitating the allocation of compensations and for not decreasing these. It was established that the suspect, using her position, asked and received 30 to 50% of the amount that was to be paid to each of the victims.
The woman was caught red-handed, while her office was searched. She was placed in the remand prison for 72 hours. She faces up to 15 years in jail for passive corruption.
