Fuels in Moldova increase in price slower than in Europe, but prices remain higher
In the last three years, fuel prices, excluding taxes, rose almost two times less than in Europe. However, retail prices for both gasoline and diesel fuel at the pump, excluding taxes, were in most cases slightly higher than EU averages, given the lack of refineries and Moldova's total dependence on imports, the National Energy Regulatory Agency said in a press release.
In particular, gasoline prices in Moldova, excluding taxes, rose 1.8 times from 2009, compared to 2.5 times in the EU countries. Diesel fuel prices rose in Moldova 1.5 times, compared to 1.9 times in the EU.
Today most Moldovan petroleum companies work at a profit rate of 1-3%, significantly below the 10% margin allowed by the legislation. The markup doesn't exceed 14% and includes all transportation and stocking costs as well as the profit. To compare, in 2009 the markup was 26% for gasoline and 28% for diesel fuel.
